I also wanted a better workout while riding, and couldn't exhibit self control on a normal bike by using only one gear. For this project, I used an old Univega bike frame from the 's. I really like the character and craftsmanship of older bike frames.
Thanks for this information, especially as I'm looking at a 50's vintage Schwinn 3 speed. It's a New World model in fair shape. Glad this was helpful.
The Schwinn Starlet was a ladies' cruising bike made between the late s and the s. A modern, lower quality version of the Starlet cruiser is available in the 21st century under the Schwinn brand. Although restored vintage Starlet bikes may be worth several hundred dollars to collectors, unrestored models may be found for very little at garage sales or through classifieds.
What are we looking at? The steel frame is made from Reynolds tubing, brazed into fairly typical racing bike geometry. The seat tube is laid-back at a shallow angle, giving the rider good leverage to muscle around a heavy gear.
If you're riding for sheer pleasure, or for exercise, you don't necessarily place that high a premium on output results, as measured in speed, distance or vertical climb. Instead, you may care more about the actual experience of riding your bike. In this case, you may be a candidate for a singlespeed bike. Riding a singlespeed can help bring back the unfettered joy you experienced riding your bike as a child.
Equipped for racing! Impressive and fast performance! Recommended to consumers for commuting or fitness!
